P.R.O.M.P.T. Technique

Did you know that there are more than 100 muscles that are used to speak? The accurate timing and movement of these muscles is integral to produce clear speech.

The PROMPT technique is a method that allows the therapist to provide not just visual, verbal or touch cues to improve speech production, but tactile-kinesthetic input as well. This technique facilitates the development of motor control of the speech articulators (jaw, tongue, lips), and eliminates unnecessary muscle movements such as jaw sliding and inadequate lip rounding that may distort speech intelligibility.

The production of a single word can be difficult for some, especially as the complexity of the word increases. For example, articulating the word “AT” requires the speaker to not only produce both the “a” and “t” sounds accurately, but also move the mouth fluidly between both sounds with the right timing and sequence. However, as the word increases in length and complexity (e.g. “hAT” - “mATch” - “cATastrophy”), coordinating the 100+ muscles to accurately produce each sound to the next can be quite a difficult task resulting in decreased speech intelligibility.
