The Picture Exchange Communication System (PECS) a low-tech assistive/augmentative communication system to provide a means of functional communication for children. Although it was originally implemented for pre-school students with autism, PECS is also used with children who have difficulty with verbal output whether speech or language-related.

The main goal of PECS is to teach functional communication using a developmentally appropriate model. In some cases, it is used as a transitional system until the child develops his/her verbal skills. For others, a speech generating device may be recommended as language demands increase.
